alginate
Features & Benefits
Alginate is a high-quality natural product consisting of seaweed and seaweed. Packed as a powder, it is mixed with water to form an elastic mass that can be used in a variety of ways. Due to the extremely high level of detail, it is often used in dentistry, but also in model and mold making. Due to the herbal composition, the molding compound is extremely skin-friendly, which makes it ideal for molding body parts - including babies.
DIY! Mold body parts & objects with alginate yourself
The alginate powder is ideal for molding objects and, due to the plant-based materials, perfect for body parts such as baby hands. It is easily mixed with water and hardens quickly - depending on the alginate selected. The homogeneous mass resulting from the mixing can be applied directly to the selected impression model. After hardening, the alginate mold can also be poured with a specially designed casting compound.
That's how it works!
1. Selection of the alginateIn order to select the right alginate, it is important to determine the object or body part to be molded. Because of the different processing times, the alginate may harden too quickly, for example when taking impressions of children's hands. |
2. Material preparationOnly a few additional materials are required to produce an alginate impression. These are: a scale, a large bowl, a mixer (mixer) and a suitable mold if an object is to be molded. Due to the short processing time, you should have all the necessary materials ready right at the beginning. |
3. Mix and process the alginateAt the beginning, the 12°C cold water and the alginate powder are weighed in the specified mixing ratio by weight. To stir the mass, it is advisable to use a mixer to save time. The viscous alginate can then be applied to the body part to be molded. Alternatively, the mass is poured into a mold and the object to be molded is inserted. |
4. Curing and further processingFinal hardening occurs after just a few minutes. Thereafter, the alginate can be removed from the corresponding body part or the object can be removed from the mold. In a final step, the resulting form can then be filled with different casting compounds. Please note the corresponding product descriptions. |
Tips & tricks for problem-free impression taking with alginate:
- The processing and curing times can be influenced by the water temperature: cold = slower, warm = faster
- Large impressions, such as a torso, should also be supported with plaster bandages
- One-time impression - alginate molds can usually only be cast once
- The molds are not heat-resistant and are therefore not suitable for cast resin, tin or lead casting
- Pour out quickly after hardening - alginate molds shrink afterwards due to the evaporation of the water they contain
- Test amount - mix up a small amount to test and let it harden so you can better estimate the time of the work processes
- Leftovers can easily be disposed of in household waste - do not pour down the drain!
